Poisonings in Kastoria (dogs, cats, wild birds)

NEWS RELEASE

Friday, 21 February 2003

We are sorry to inform everybody about the repeated  and systematic use of poisons against animals especially dogs in the area named Kastoria (Pop.48000).  This county is placed at the North - West side of Greece.

Last week the crime against the animals took place at Argos Orectiko (Pop 10000). We received  the protest of the students of the  neighbor school. They collected signatures to protest for the poisoning of maverick dogs in there area.. Yesterday, poisoned dolomite were scattered near the area of Polikarpi (Pop 500) which is on the East side of the Lake of Kastoria. The dead dogs were estimated to 50 and 10 dead falcons (buteo-buteo) were found in a square Kilometer that screeched. Other kinds of birds ( pika-pika , corvus corone etc.) and cats were killed too.

This area is an important biotope, in which there are birds referred in the red data book as been running the risk to be vanished.

The Greek low protects both birds and dogs but this is not applied and no search takes place. These crimes are committed especially during the end of the winter when tourist period starts soon. Another disappointing point is that European Community has financed a shelter for the dogs of the area. It is proposed to sterilize the maverick dogs and let then free again. The mayor of the capital of the area (Pop. 20000) is trying to put it in use while the dogs are systematically killed.
