Zac from Corfu

On a back road in Kassiopi (North East Corfu), there is a small road that
runs to a small beach. Halfway along this road is a wire fence that
separates the road from a small basic farm (holding chickens). At first glance you
would probably miss the dog. There is a make-shift kennel next to the fence,
and this is surrounded by c. 10 chickens. There is a large tree root on the
ground which is where the dog is tied up to. The dog (called Zac by the owner)
is tied by a metal chain of about 1 meter in length. It is obviously there
to guard the chickens!

However, the general scene we encounter was the dog is never taken for walks
(the owner confirmed this verbally to us who we met once briefly) and is
never taken off the 1 metre chain and therefore has to live in its own
excrement and urine.

There were a couple of small, uncooked chicken breasts rotting, for all
intense and purposes, right under his nose. The insects and flies were a
terrible distraction for him as were the many mites on his coat. Both his
ears were cut-up and covered in sores, clearly because of the barbed-wire on
the fence.

Having spent a large amount of time there, we never witnessed a feeding
session (probably left to the tourists) and was definitely never even provided
new clean water. There was on plastic bowl which was full of filth and
dirt though and a small amount of disgusting stagnant water.

He was a wonderfully good natured dog - a lovely animal and responded with
amazing enthusiasm to any warmness and kindness we gave. It would be a huge
shame if we are unable to help this creature - even in some small way! I
would have loved to take him home to Cologne with me.

Location

There is one main road in Kassiopi with all the shops and restaurants,
running towards the harbour. If you enter the village, from the south, via this main road you'll find only after a couple of metres a surgery (CorfuMedica: tel: 0663 081661) on the right-hand-side and then a few metres further a Mexican restaurant called Poco Loco on the left side of the road. Directly opposite to that Mexican restaurant is a small road which leads to 'Sukia Beach'. Follow this bendy road for about 300 metres up, then partially up a little hill, until you see a sign saying: "To the Beach". There you turn left. After ca. 200 metres you'll find Zac (on the left) behind a fence.

I understand your thoughts in your last email. I am however ever hopeful
that we all can achieve something positive for Zac. I truly appreciate all
and any help you can provide us and of course him!

Thank you again and kind regards
